Dining Chair Width
Choosing the correct size for your dining chairs
This is often overlooked, but it's important. The correct size dining chairs can really make a difference to the layout of your home. There are two points to consider when checking that your chairs are appropriate. The first is height, and the second is width.
Height of chairs
Firstly, you need to make sure that your chairs are low enough to slide under the dining table. This will help to maximise the space and also looks a lot neater! However, ensure that there is also enough room for your legs when you are sat at the table. You don't want your guests to be knocking knees! The average height for a dining table is 30 inches, so dining chairs generally need to be around 18 inches high. There should be around 12 inches between the tabletop and the seat. If you follow this rule of thumb, it's likely that you'll get it right.
Width of chairs
Most dining chairs come in widths between 16 and 20 inches. It often depends on the style of chair. Consider the extra space that will be needed between each chair. If there isn't enough, your guests will bump elbows during dinner! Allow around 24-30 inches space for each chair. This will give your guests a comfortable amount of room to eat and manoeuvre.
How far away from the wall do the chairs need to be?
Allow at least 36 inches between your dining chairs and the wall (or any other furniture for that matter). This will give enough room for people to walk past, and to comfortably pull the chairs out. If you have a bit more room than average, 48 inches is the ultimate ideal amount of space between your chairs and the wall or other furniture.
